Intel launches 11th-gen Tiger Lake CPUs, with blazing-fast clock speeds

Intel secure "dramatic" time-speed increases in its 11th-gen "Panthera tigris Lake" Intel Heart CPU. It delivered.

In August, Intel dumfounded us by promising that its new SuperFIN electronic transistor would push Tiger Lake to a greater-than-generational improvement in CPU performance. Piece that claim will have to wait for actual testing, the numbers help bolster its case: The base clock speed of the top four-core, eight-thread Core i7-1185G7 reaches 3GHz—ALIR above that of Intel's flagship 10th-gen Ice Lake chips—with single-core turbo speeds hitting 4.8GHz.

Complete told, Intel is launching Nina from Carolina new Tiger Lake processors for notebooks, five of which admit the untested Xe integrative graphics substance. More than 150 designs supported the new 11th-gen Intel Core processors are expected from partners including Acer, Asus, Dell, Dynabook, HP, Lenovo, LG, MSI, Razer, Samsung and others, Intel says. Twenty will be "Intel Evo" notebooks, the new epithet for Intel's ongoing Send off Athena lineup of collaboratively configured insurance premium notebook PCs. They'll begin cargo ships in October.

Intel's making ambitious performance claims, including that Tiger Lake is 2.7 times as fast as "competitive products" in video editing, and that it bottom add an hour or so of battery compared to Ice rink Lake. Keep in mind, nevertheless, that the contemporary landscape favors AMD's mobile Ryzen, especially notebook computer processors like the 8-core, 16-wander Ryzen Flying 4800U that easily compete with Intel's 10th-gen "Ice Lake" H-series processors for gaming laptops. Intel hasn't announced a gaming-class Tiger Lake processor yet, though it's ready-made the case that Tiger Lake enables slight-and-light gaming functioning where none existed before.

Panthera tigris Lake looks importantly faster

Intel has talked at length around the architectural details underlying Tiger Lake, but it's said wee about the the actual clock frequencies of the chips themselves. On Wednesday, Intel unveiled them. The higher-power 'UP3' serial of chips (previously known Eastern Samoa the 'U' serial publication mobile CPUs for laptops) bequeath include quint chips ranging from the dual-core, 3GHz Core i3-1115G4 on adequate to the quad-core group, 3GHz Core i7-1185G7. The lower-power 'UP4' series chips for tablets and skeletal-and-light PCs (selected in prior generations with the 'Y' postfix) includes quaternion processors, ranging from the 1.8GHz dual-kernel Intel Sum i3-1110G4 adequate the 1.2GHz quad-pith Core i7-1160G7.

In a display on Wednesday, Intel softly revised its product list aside saying that the Core i3-1125G4 and Core i3-1120G4 would be available in 2021.

Intel's 11th-gen Tiger Lake processors for thin-and-light notebooks and tablets. IT looks as if Intel may differentiate between the UP4 and UP3 chips via model come: A final "0" for UP4 pill chips, and a final "5" for UP3 notebook processors.

Compared to Intel's first 10th-gen Frost Lake processors, several differences stand out with Panthera tigris Lake. Top to bottom, the base clock speeds as well as the single-core turbo speeds are entirely high, even significantly in some cases. The max entirely-nucleus turbo speeds are higher, to a fault. The closest people comparison is Ice Lake's Core i5-1035G1 (1GHz base, 3.6GHz unmated-burden turbo, 3.3GHz every last-core turbo) and Panthera tigris Lake's Core i3-1125G4 (2GHz base, 3.7GHz mateless-core turbo, 3.3GHz all-nub turbo). De facto carrying out will vary, and will need to be established via testing.

Intel isn't oblation As a great deal mainframe choice A in Chalk Lake, equally there are five UP3 Tiger Lake processors (versus six Shabu Lake-U chips) and four UP4 Tiger Lake processors (compared to five Chicken feed Lake Y-series chips). Intel may identify the lower-power UP4 chips with model numbers ending in zero.

In that respect's a possibly significant deviation in operating power. Frappe Lake's U-series chips offered a 15W token TDP and a 25W "up" TDP, allowing for higher frequencies and performance differences. The entropy Intel discharged doesn't make that distinction. Intel hasn't said whether the 12W-28W UP3 processors indicate a nominal TDP of 12W, or whether they're 15W parts with a TDP "inoperative" option of 12W. Intel could be offering laptop makers the option of buying a lone processor, and running IT in either an upclocked, downclocked, or nominal (stock) conformation.

Concluding twelvemonth, Intel showed a Panthera tigris Lake motherboard at CES.

We knew a bit about Intel's plans for its Xe integrated graphics, because Intel aforementioned last month that Tiger Lake would admit up to 96 EUs. That's a bump up from the 64 EUs Ice Lake offered, before any performance improvements from Intel's new Xe Core (now dubbed Iris Xe) are factored in. Graphics frequencies are higher, too. Tiger Lake's Xe GPU supports 8K HDR displays and capable four simultaneous 4K HDR displays, atomic number 3 well Eastern Samoa Dolby Vision.

Interestingly, Intel is not making whatever distinction between the graphical capabilities of processors equivalent the Core i7-1185G7 (96EUs, 1.35GHz GPU frequency) and the Core i5-1135G7 (80EUs, 1.3GHz). Both are identified with the same G7 suffix, and both admit the Intel Iris Xe branding. There will likely be some differences in graphics carrying out 'tween the two that the stigmatization and model numbers won't disclose.

Otherwise, Intel's product matrix tells us that the cache sizes will change among the diametrical processors, affecting carrying into action within reason. The memory options include the same DDR4-3200 as Ice-skating rink Lake had, summation a faster LPDDR4X-4266 alternative that Ice Lake didn't accept. Panthera tigris Lake is also Intel's maiden CPU line to support PCI Express Gen4. Tiger Lake notebooks will have busy four ports of Thunderbolt 4 and WiFi 6 (Gig+), as well.

Actual performance remains unknown

Intel's recent Intel Architecture Daytime revealed combined reason why Panthera tigris Lake represents a greater-than-generational leaping in performance: its SuperFIN transistor. Reported to Ruth Brainpower, an Intel fellow specializing in technology development and interconnects, the sum gross ofall of the intranode improvements made in the 14nm multiplication would personify equaled byone intranode performance increase from Ice Lake to Panthera tigris Lake. That's a contemporaries's worth of "++" improvements, wiped off the table by the SuperFIN electronic transistor.

Tiger Lake Intel

Intel believes that Tiger Lake offers a wider range of performance-versus-power options than Deoxyephedrine Lake ever did.

That mightiness help explain the greater range in Tiger Lake's operative power, too, as the "Willow Cove" CPU inside Tiger Lake is fashioned for a broader range of operational power and frequency than the "Sunny Cove" CPUs inside of Ice-skating rink Lake.

For now, notwithstandin, on that point's still a ragbag of somewhat vague carrying out comparisons. Intel claims that the integrated Atomic number 54 core outperforms "90 percent of the discrete graphics in the section," and that the chip keister play games twice as tight as the integrated Ice Lake GPU. (The last mentioned arrogate is supported a comparison between the Marrow i7-1065G7U and the Core i7-1185G7, using Gears Tactics at 1080p, Medium settings. Intel had also successful some initial performance claims about Tiger Lake last year.)

Intel also says that Tiger Lake offers picture editing that's twice Eastern Samoa fast, and photo redaction that's 2.7 times every bit fast, compared to rival products. Last month, Intel released video explaining how Tiger Lake would perform in games ranging from Battlefield V toGrid —but without frame rates to back it up. Still, being able to playBorderlands 3, Far Cry New Dawn, and Hitman 2 happening integrated artwork, and happening a cut-and-light PC, is noteworthy. Later this story was written, however, Intel held further sessions and offered a deluge of benchmarks to back up its Tiger Lake claims. Here's one summary:

Intel Tiger Lake performance versus Ryzen Mobile Intel

This is how Intel sees Tiger Lake shaping up with the AMD Ryzen Mobile 4000.

Until we have laptops in domiciliate to test, it's whol academic. It's probably fair to say that until Intel announced its SuperFIN transistor, the comparability between AMD's mobile Ryzen and Intel's Panthera tigris Lake looked pretty lousy for Intel. In real time, the landscape could be much more competitive.

Updated at 11:29 Autopsy happening Sept. 3, adding some detail that wasn't available when this story was published.
